As October begins, the foliage change in the Southeast remains low. However, the coming weeks will certainly usher in the wonderful colors of fall. Currently, the highest degree of color change can be seen throughout the Great Smoky Mountains and Bald Mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee and along the Appalachian Mountain Chain in eastern West Virginia and extreme western Maryland. However, the change is low at 11 to 30 percent. Elsewhere in the region, color change remains at or below 10 percent.
