October 26, 2002 More of the region is beginning to show fall colors as much of the Appalachian Chain moves into the high color (61 to 80 percent) range. The higher elevations of western Maryland and northeastern West Virginia has reached peak conditions, as has portions of the Allegheny Mountains in western Virginia. Leaf drop in most of the region low to moderate, with high leaf drop in some of the areas reporting peak. Some suggested scenic drives include the following. In Maryland: Route 219 running north to south in western Maryland; Route 135 from Bloomington to Altamont. In West Virginia: Route 219 from Silver Lake to Elkins; Route 72 from Hambleton to Red Creek; Route 33 from Elkins to Harman. In Virginia: Route 220 from the West Virginia border to Warm Springs.
