As a sure sign that the summer is over and as a preview of what is soon
to come, snow fell throughout much of the Northeast. If you've never seen
the foliage and snow together, you are missing an absolutely beautiful
sight! With the snow came many more reports of peak foliage color in much
of northern Maine, northern New Hampshire, and locations throughout Vermont.
The Adirondack and Catskill Mountains of New York are also at peak. High
color change is the rule in the remaining areas of northern New England
and northern New York. Central New York and an area covering southwest
New York and northwest Pennsylvania are also reporting a high degree of
color change. All other areas remain in the low to moderate range..
A strong cold front recently
moved through the Northeast, bringing with it moderate to strong winds.
These winds resulted in an increase in leaf drop throughout many areas
in the Northeast. At this point in the foliage season, there are only
two isolated areas reporting high leaf drop (northeastern New Hampshire
and portions of the Catskill Mountains of New York). All other areas continue
to experience only low to moderate leaf drop.
This information provided by
Marek D. Rzonca, The Foliage Network. The next report will be released
Saturday, October 13, 2001.
